Cooking classes in Singapore

A cooking class is one of the best ways to take Singapore home with you. Classes run all year, so the weather matters more for the rest of your day: Singapore is warmest in April at about 90°F (32°C).

What to eat and drink in Singapore

Classes here usually build the menu around local dishes. Ones to look for:

Hainanese chicken rice
Poached chicken with rice cooked in chicken stock, served with chilli and ginger sauces.
Laksa
A spicy coconut curry noodle soup with prawns, fish cake and cockles.
Satay
Skewers of grilled marinated meat with peanut sauce.
Kaya toast
Toast with coconut-egg jam and butter, eaten with soft-boiled eggs and strong coffee.
Char kway teow
Flat rice noodles stir-fried over high heat with prawns, cockles, egg and sweet soy.
Roti prata
Crisp, flaky flatbread served with a curry dip.
Hawker
Hawker centres: open-air food courts with dozens of stalls, each cooking a few dishes very well.

How to pick a good cooking class

  1. Check whether you cook every dish yourself or watch a demonstration. Hands-on classes usually cap groups at 10 to 12.
  2. Morning classes often start with a market walk to buy ingredients; afternoon ones go straight to the kitchen.
  3. Tell the host about allergies or a vegetarian diet when you book, not on the day.
  4. Look for a class that sends the recipes home with you, so you can cook them again.
